Having some basic wardrobe essentials in your closet makes getting dressed 10x easier. These closet staples will create the core of pretty much any outfit you wear and take away all of the guess work. These are my bare minimum wardrobe basics, but I have a full wardrobe essentials checklist here to check out! It’s full of my wardrobe essentials, a checklist, and over 80 different ways to style them. For now, let’s get into 10 of my wardrobe essentials!
1. Dark Denim
Denim is always going to be a wardrobe essential and the type can change depending on the season, but I believe that dark denim will always be the most versatile. You can dress it up for a business casual look or dress it down for a casual coffee date. I love a good pair of distressed denim just as much as the next gal, but if I could only live with one pair of denim it would be a classic dark pair. My favorite pair of dark denim is from American Eagle.
2. Black Leggings
Leggings are most definitely a staple to have in your closet. Not only can you wear them all year round, but they are so dang comfortable and easy to style. This another piece that you can dress up or down really easily. They also never go out of style. My all time favorite pair of leggings are the Spanx faux leather leggings. They just do all of the right things and make me look fantastic. They are on the pricier side, but you only have to buy them once and they’re well worth the investment. I also love the regular Torrid leggings and they are at a more affordable price point.
3. Denim Shorts
This can differ depending on where you live, but in South Georgia denim shorts are pretty much a year round wardrobe essential. When I’m choosing a denim short I will more than likely go for a distressed style because I am generally always styling a more casual outfit with denim shorts. My favorite pair of denim shorts is from Target.
4. White Tee
This is one of my favorite wardrobe essentials because it is so versatile! However, I really find that a basic white tee is the most overlooked. You can dress them up and throw them under a blazer or dress them down and tie them in a knot with a basic pair of denim shorts. I like to buy my white tees a bit on the bigger side, so that I’m able to tuck and tie and do all of the things. Here’s a video I did showing 15 different ways to style a basic white tee. My favorite white tee is from Target.
5. Graphic Tee
Graphic tees are perfect for styling with more casual or edgy outfits. One of my favorite ways to style them is with denim and a blazer. For me, I try to go for a more neutral graphic tee so that I can wear it with a ton of different outfits, but that’s totally up to you and you can go for a more colorful statement piece. I like to get my graphic tees from Torrid and Target.
6. Chambray Button Down
Chambray button downs are so overlooked! I get it, on the hanger they do look a bit plain, but they are almost always the perfect finishing touch to an outfit. I love tying them around my waist to add some shape to a casual outfit and it doesn’t weigh me down like denim. You can also just throw them over your outfit without buttoning it or even just wear it regularly. There are tons of options with it! My favorite place to get chambray button downs is Old Navy.
7. Denim Jacket
I love the look of a classic denim jacket. It adds the perfect touch to any outfit, especially in the fall and winter when you want something a bit heavier. I tend to go for an oversized and distressed more trucker style jacket, but you can go for something more fitted and classic as well, depending on the look you’re trying to achieve. My favorite denim jacket is from Torrid.
8. Black Blazer
Don’t click away yet! Blazers are not only for the office. As I said before, I love styling them with a graphic tee and denim. This is another piece that’s really easy to dress up or dress down, depending on the look you’re going for. I particularly like the ones that more fitted right at the waist and create a nice shape. My favorite places to get blazers are Torrid and Eloquii.
9. White Sneakers
These are a classic shoe that every woman needs in their closet. They work with nearly any outfit in any season. They’re my go to “throw on” shoe when I’m putting together a quick outfit. This style can look different for different people. Some people love Nike or Vans, but I personally love Converse.
10. Black Flats
This could look different for you. You could totally replace this item with a cute pair of black heels. I rarely every wear heels though, so flats are more of my speed. I go for pointed toe flats for a more elevated and classic look that way I can dress it up or down, depending on the outfit I’m styling. My favorite place to get these flats are Torrid.
